Recently, the Australian Government has approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for use in children aged 5-11 years. The Pfizer vaccine is already approved for children older than 12 years of age.
The Cardiologists at the Heart Centre for Children, Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN) strongly recommend that all children aged 5-16 years be vaccinated with a TGA approved vaccine for their age group - this includes children with heart conditions.
Any risk associated with a COVID-19 vaccine is far smaller than the risks of being infected with COVID-19. Being infected with COVID-19 following successful vaccination with a vaccine has been shown to be extremely effective in preventing serious illness. This is even more important in children with heart conditions.
To show that your child is eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, use a copy of your latest letter from your cardiologist. If you do not have a copy of a letter, then please contact your general practitioner first or subsequently email the Heart Centre for Children, SCHN at SCHN-HeartCentreforChildren@health.nsw.gov.au.
